Athens-Clarke County's longtime planning director will retire on June 7.
Brad Griffin, who oversees the county's land use and growth, has served in the ACC government since 1992. He has directed the Planning Department for 24 years.
In his 24 years heading the Planning Department, Griffin helped manage rapid growth across the county. He has been a fixture at commission meetings, guiding local lawmakers through the complexities of the county's building and zoning codes as the county grew by some 40,000 residents.
"Brad will be sorely missed by staff, elected officials, and the community for his role in the growth and planning of this community since the 1990s," said County Manager Blaine Williams. "With his knowledge of the code and consistent pragmatism, Brad has guided others to help implement the community values of the code to influence the look and feel of this community for generations to come. He has truly left Athens-Clarke County in better condition than when he first started here."
Assistant Director Bruce Lonnee will take the reins at the Planning Department pending the results of a national search for Griffin's replacement.
