Nonprofit government watchdog sues state Board of Elections

A government watchdog group is suing the Georgia Board of Elections for allegedly violating the state’s Open Meetings Act.

At issue is a meeting of the board held on July 12. The group American Oversight, a non-profit consisting of lawyers, researchers, and others, contends that the meeting was held without proper notice to the public. American Oversight’s lawsuit also alleges that board members were warned by the Attorney General’s office that the meeting might be in violation of the law.

At that meeting, which only three of the board’s five members attended, two new election rules were approved. One would require counties to post ballot counts each day on their websites. The other would open up counting rooms to more partisan observers.

American Oversight is asking the court to nullify those rules and fine the three board members who attended the meeting.
