Community health protects the well-being of all who live among us – not only humans but also our beloved pets and other animals.

The University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine partners with the Athens Area Humane Society’s shelter medicine initiative to provide a wide range of services that support animal health. Each year, over 50 veterinary students perform or assist with more than 2,000 medical procedures.

Dr. Staci Cannon, a UGA veterinary medicine alumna, returned to Athens in 2022 to serve as the college’s first faculty shelter medicine specialist. Cannon is housed at the Humane Society and oversees veterinary medical students who are completing clinical rotations there. Dr. Cannon talks with WUGA’s Greg Trevor in the latest episode of our series, “A Few Minutes With …” exploring UGA initiatives and their broad benefits to the state of Georgia.

The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation has pledged $750,000 to enable the College of Veterinary Medicine to acquire a mobile veterinary clinic to train students and support companion animal welfare throughout Georgia.

To support the shelter medicine initiative, please contact Michelle Jones, the college’s regional director of development, at 256-452-3772.
