Report: District Attorney's office says it won over 50% of cases tried last year

A new report from the office of District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez says that a majority of cases that went to trial last fiscal year were won by the prosecutor’s team.

According to the report, Gonzalez’s office received nearly 3,600 cases from July 2023 to June 2024. 60% of those cases were felonies. The DA’s office says it took 571 cases to the grand jury and 17 cases to trial. 53% of those cases resulted in a guilty verdict.

Gonzalez has been criticized over her handling of cases in recent years. In 2023, she issued an apology for violating a law requiring prosecutors to keep victims informed in a case involving rape and child molestation.

The DA has long argued that her office is understaffed as a result of noncompetitive salaries and a lack of funding from the county budget. Her office reports that eight assistant district attorneys have joined the team in the last five months.
