Energy efficient upgrades offered to select Athens-Clarke County homeowners.

The federal government has granted over $170,000 for a more energy-efficient Athens.

The Clean and Renewable Energy Plan of Athens will get a boost of over $170,000 to upgrade home appliances to more energy-efficient models. The money comes in the form of a grant from the Department of Energy.

The Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County will use the money to establish an Appliance Assistance Initiative, which will provide upgraded HVAC systems, heat pumps, and water heaters. The initiative will be for income-qualified homeowners and will prioritize those in energy-burdened census tracts whose homes were previously part of a health and safety renovation or a qualified weatherization improvement program.

This energy-saving initiative is part of a country-wide green initiative pushed by the Biden-Harris Administration. The grant program will distribute $12 million dollars to other local governments to support clean energy programs.
