An Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s deputy has been arrested and charged with violation of his oath of office. According to investigators, the deputy, identified as Zachariah Smith of Elberton, engaged in inappropriate conduct with a female inmate and provided the inmate with contraband.

The nature of the relationship and type of contraband was not disclosed by the GBI. The investigation began Oct. 8 after the sheriff’s office requested the GBI to investigate reports made by other jailers about Smith's alleged conduct with the female inmate.
