More than four million Georgians cast their ballots during advance voting in the state, with 3.7 million turning out in-person to vote. According to Charlotte Sosebee, the Clarke County Director of Elections and Voter Registration, voters in Athens-Clarke were no different, setting a record.
“So, we’ve had 36,823 advance voters who have voted during advance voting,” according to Sosebee. “As of close of business on Friday, we have received 3,188 absentee ballots. So that gives me a total as close of business on Friday, 40,011 voters who have cast ballots before Election Day.”
Sosebee says that number is expected to increase. The voter turnout was significantly higher than the two previous presidential elections.
“We definitely broke a record. In 2016, we had 23,4223 voters who had cast ballots by advance voting. In 2020, we had 23,811. We did exceed that this time.”
According to Secretary of State Bard Raffensperger’s office, in addition to the 3.7 million in-person voters, more than 343,000 Georgians requested absentee ballots statewide.
