Athens-Clarke County saw slow voter turnout on Election Day, though thousands of residents did head to the polls to join the tens of thousands of early and absentee voters.

Director of Elections Charlotte Sosebee says things ran smoothly at the polling locations.

“Our precincts opened on time, that’s always a good thing because what we don’t want to happen is to have to have extended hours,” Sosebee said. “Because that requires a court order from the Superior Court judge.”

Sosebee did say there were a few voters who were unable to cast their ballots because they were not eligible to vote in Clarke County.

“We have received some calls from voters who are out of state voters who hoped to cast provisional ballots in Georgia, and of course that’s not legal. The provisional ballots wouldn’t count because they’re not registered to vote. I’ve noticed over the county we’ve had a couple voters who had received absentee ballots from other counties and had hoped to return their ballots here and we told them that it had to be in their county.”

More than four million Georgians voted during early voting. Clarke County saw over 40,000 residents take advantage of advance voting.
