Jose Ibarra, the man accused of killing nursing student Laken Riley, was found guilty of ten counts by Judge H. Patrick Haggard on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 in Athens, GA.

Jose Ibarra, the man accused of killing former University of Georgia student Laken Riley, has been found guilty of ten counts by Judge H. Patrick Haggard. Ibarra was charged with felony murder, malice murder, kidnapping with bodily injury, aggravated assault with intent to rape, aggravated battery, hindering a 911 call, tampering with evidence, and Peeping Tom.

The accused remained expressionless as all counts were read. Gasps and weeping could be heard in the courtroom.

Riley’s parents, sister, and friends tearfully read impact statements before Judge Haggard sentenced Ibarra. Allyson Phillips, Riley’s mother, asked the judge to apply the maximum sentence.

“There’s no end to pain and suffering that he has inflicted on our family and our friends. I’m asking you to please give this monster life without possibility of parole so he never gets the chance to hurt anybody else again.”

Judge Haggard sentenced the defendant to life in prison without the possibility of parole, a consecutive life sentence, as well as another 27 years in prison.
