UGA and CCSD team up to offer art and activism program

The COVID-19 pandemic paused an after school program for middle schoolers created by Clarke County School District and the University of Georgia. That program, which fuses art and activism this year, is back up and running.

An art-based after school program for bilingual students is back building community this year at Coile Middle School. The program is led by Ruth Harman and Kevin Burke, two professors from the Mary Frances Early College of Education at UGA.

It is also run in collaboration with 21st Century Community Learning Centers, a federal initiative.

The program has been on hiatus since the COVID-19 pandemic. In past years, students advocated for new marquees, food trucks, and funding for the track and field team.

The art-based activism program supports 30 students who are enrolled as English Speakers of Other Languages.
