Georgia DOT Launches Overhaul of SR 316 with 3 newly awarded projects

The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded contracts for three significant projects along State Route 316 in Oconee County. These initiatives aim to improve safety and traffic flow by eliminating at-grade crossings and constructing grade-separated interchanges and is slated to begin construction this year.

The first project focuses on the intersection of SR 316 and Jimmy Daniel Road, where a new grade-separated diamond interchange will replace the existing at-grade crossing. Two single-lane roundabouts will be constructed, one at the SR 8/SR 316/US 29 northern ramp terminal and the other at the southern ramp terminal.

Similarly, the second project involves constructing a grade-separated interchange at the junction of SR 316 and the Oconee Connector. The existing grade-level signalized interchange will be replaced by an overpass with a partial cloverleaf interchange.

The third project addresses the intersection of SR 316 and Virgil Langford Road. Currently, Virgil Langford Road does not cross SR 316. The project includes building a grade-separated overpass connecting Virgil Langford Rd. over 316, facilitating safer and more efficient travel. However, Virgil Langford Rd. will no longer directly access 316.

While aimed at enhancing safety and traffic flow, SR 316 improvement projects in Oconee County could face several criticisms and challenges. Environmental concerns may arise due to the construction of grade-separated interchanges, which could disrupt local ecosystems, including potential habitat loss and increased stormwater runoff affecting nearby water bodies.

Local Athens businesses and communities might experience temporary disruptions during construction, with road closures and detours potentially reducing accessibility and impacting revenue.
