GBI Investigating Officer-involved Shooting in Athens

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Athens-Clarke County Police Department and the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a 25-year-old Athens man injured. According to a release, officers responded to an armed robbery call in the 400 block of North Avenue around 2:24 pm on Tuesday. The suspected vehicle used was located on Commerce Road and a chase ensued. The vehicle was stopped on Newton Bridge Road. Two suspects fled the scene and were pursued by deputies and officers. During that pursuit, police saw a gun and a deputy fired, hitting the suspect.

Javious Mattox was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Both suspects were taken into custody. Two firearms were located at the scene. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.
