The University of Georgia celebrated the 5th anniversary of the naming of the Mary Frances Early College of Education Tuesday.

In 1962, Mary Frances Early became the first African American person to graduate from the University of Georgia, where she earned a master’s degree in music education. UGA’s College of Education was named after her on February 25th, 2020.

The inaugural cohort of the Mary Frances Early Scholars was also named this year. The five members of the cohort, which includes both graduate and undergraduate students, are set to receive scholarships of $5,000.

Mary Frances Early also became the first African American president of the Georgia Music Educators Association in 1981, and was a professor of music education at Clark-Atlanta University.

2025 also marks the 25th anniversary of the Mary Frances Early Lecture Series, which was held in February.
