The Georgia House has passed a lawsuit reform bill. The measure, which is Governor Kemp’s signature legislation, now heads to the Senate. Senate Bill passed in a 91-82 vote. The bill would impose new limits on lawsuit judgement payouts. Gov. Kemp said the measure would maintain Georgia’s business competitiveness.

Supporters like Representative Chaz Cannon say the bill ensures legal balance.

“This bill addresses the pressing need to balance the scales of justice, ensuring fairness for both plaintiffs and defendants while stimulating economic growth across Georgia,” according to Cannon.

But opponents like Representative Stacey Evans who's an attorney say… the bill could harm victims.

“I rise in strong opposition to Senate Bill 68,” said Evans. “And we’ve seen victims come down here and plead with us to not do this. To not shut the doors of justice on them. Do you know how hard that must be for them? If they can do that, if they can stand up, it is not hard for me, and I’m never scared and I hope you are never scared too. And I hope you will keep a voice for these victims and please join me in voting no.”

The house version of the bill includes some carveouts for sex trafficking victims, so the Senate will need to approve it again before it goes to the governor’s desk.

Governor Kemp had threatened to hold a special session if the measure did not pass
