ACCA on Meals on Wheels 'End the Wait' Campaign'

The Athens Community Council on Aging is participating in a national campaign in support of its Meals on Wheels program.

The End the Wait campaign is aimed at raising awareness and funding for Meals on Wheels. The goal is to get the 40 area seniors currently on the wait list into the program. Eve Anthony is the president and CEO of ACCA. She says seniors receive more than meals from the program.

“I think what most people don’t recognize when they think about Meals on Wheels is they think about just that meal, but for many that knock at the door from a volunteer, is the beginning of something that’s a lot bigger,” according to Anthony. “So that End the Wait campaign isn’t just about food, it’s about how we’re showing up for our older neighbors before it’s too late.”

Volunteers also help seniors receive additional services.

“Meals on Wheels makes sure that older neighbors are connected to other resources. So, whether that’s a utility, their heat may have been cut off. Maybe they need a ramp to get in and out of their home, additional caregiver support, a ride to the doctor’s appointment. Just simply getting that meal gives access to social connections, safety, and a whole community of resources.”

There are nearly 4,000 seniors in Georgia on the wait list. For more information, visit accaging.org.
