As budget season get underway, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission will meet Thursday evening to hear requests from affiliated agencies and nonprofits.
Ten Agencies and nonprofits with ties to local government plan to ask for an additional million dollars compared to last year’s budget. Many of these agencies support some of the county’s most vulnerable residents.
Organizations including Advantage Behavioral Health, which provides mental healthcare to uninsured Georgians, and the Athens Community Council on Aging, which supports the elderly population in the area, will present their requests.
These groups plan to ask for a total of over $13 million, nearly a million more dollars than the amount granted last year.
The Classic Center Authority, which receives money from a fund generated by taxes from hotels and motels, will ask for the largest chunk of that increase. It plans to ask for over $300,000 to cover employee salaries and pay debts associated with the new arena.
The Athens Regional Library System plans to use the nearly $300,000 dollar increase it is requesting to cover increases in salaries, health benefits for employees, and a water tank at Pinewoods Library in North Athens.
Athens-Clarke County’s Government’s budget will go into effect beginning in July.
