The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season began Sunday, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA is predicting an above average season with 13 to 19 named storms. Of those, six to 10 are projected to become hurricanes, and three to five are expected to become major hurricanes, category three or higher. Acting NOAA Administrator Laura Grimm.

“Throughout the hurricane season, forecasters with the National Weather Service will continue to issue timely and accurate forecasts for all expected hazards,” according to Grimm. “From storm surge to high winds, to tornadoes, to inland flooding. Experts at NOAA’s National Ocean Service stand ready to assist with weather service, providing critical disaster response and real-time storm surge information.”

This August will mark the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
Hurricane season will last until the end of November.
