The Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement is kicking off Juneteenth celebrations this weekend.
While Juneteenth will officially be observed on Thursday, June 19th, the AADM is hosting a flag raising ceremony on Saturday, June 14th at Athens City Hall. Mokah-Jasmine Johnson is Executive Director and Co-founder of the nonprofit.
“It’s not just the flag raising, it’s like a reenactment of what happened for Athens’s Day of Jubilee,” Johnson said. “It’s also to honor our ancestors and it’s a way for our community to acknowledge a liberation for Black people as well.”
The flag raising takes place at 10 am. The Juneteenth Music and Arts Festival gets underway on Thursday from 3 to 7 pm.
