Athens faith groups to organize anti-deportation march Sunday

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is one religious group that will participate in the march on Sunday.

Several congregations from liberal, Christian, Jewish, and Bahai’i traditions will gather on Sunday for a march against the mass deportation policies of President Trump’s administration. Greg Davis is the chair of the Interfaith Sanctuary Coalition, a cosponsor of the International Day of Peace March of Faith in Athens.

“The idea is to show our moral opposition to family separation, to detention, to deportation without due process,” he says.
The march is also open to people who are not religiously affiliated.

Pippin Whitaker is the minister of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens and also helped to sponsor the event. She says the event is an opportunity for clergy to speak on what they consider to be the moral implications of mass deportation.

“We all have different religious teaching and scripture, and we are called through that teaching to love thy neighbor,” she says.

The march is scheduled for 2 pm on Sunday and will begin at 595 Prince Avenue in Athens.

The march will also have trained safety marshals and a first aid station.
