In the midst of hurricane season, Georgia officials and researchers are taking stock of last year’s Hurricane Helene. This week, September 24th - 27th marks the one year anniversary of Hurricane Helene.
The Category 4 storm moved through Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, as well as North and South Carolina, resulting in more than 250 deaths. The National Hurricane Center considers Helene to be the most deadly hurricane since Katrina in 2005.
One year later, Georgia is still recovering from the $5.5 billion losses in agriculture. Last year 99% of farmers surveyed in Southeast Georgia lost power after Hurricane Helene, according to a report from the Georgia Foundation for Agriculture and researchers at Mercer University.
Governor Brian Kemp has allocated $285 million for low-interest loans for farmers to help with recovery efforts.
As the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season continues, Georgians are encouraged to remain weather aware.
