To satisfy a state law to protect schools from potential threats, the mayor and commissioners of Athens-Clarke County will vote on an amendment to allow school resource officers greater access to student records.

On Tuesday night, the mayor and commission will discuss whether to approve an amendment to this year’s school resource officer program--a partnership between the local government and the Clarke County School District--to satisfy a state law passed in April.

House Bill 268 was signed by Governor Brian Kemp earlier this year. It requires schools to address potential dangers and threats to a school. The ACCPD school resource officer program is designed to maintain safety within schools and to collaborate with county police officers.

The proposed amendment will allow the release of a student's educational records to school resource officers if there is a legitimate reason to protect the health and safety of students and other individuals.
