UGA research discovers new directions for rural healthcare access for immigrants

Research shows that residents of rural America face more challenges when trying to access healthcare than urban dwelling people. A little-told story, however, is how immigrants access healthcare in these rural areas.

Dr. Yingying Zeng is a professor of social work at the University of Georgia. She recently published a review of existing studies on healthcare access for immigrant people living in rural America. Her research sets out to find what the field of social work already knows about the barriers to healthcare for these communities—as well as topics she says scientists need to study more.

Dr. Zeng sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss her results.

Local advocate named one of 50 Most Influential Latinos in Georgia

Behind the scenes of several notable changes in Athens-Clarke County—such as the implementation of bilingual ballots--is a diligent community advocate.

This summer, recent Cedar Shoals High School graduate Brittany Lopez was selected as one of the 50 Most Influential Latinos in Georgia by the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. She is the only honoree to be chosen from Clarke County.

Lopez is also the Food Access Coordinator with the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia. She sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss what motivates her—and the advice she has for young Athenians.

Reveal to unpack mystery of Athens band Neutral Milk Hotel

If you’ve listened to the investigative radio show Reveal, then you’re familiar with how they use the power of journalism to dig deep and report on really tough topics. However, with their next episode, in an attempt to take a break from the crushing daily news cycle and spark a little joy, they’re doing something different. Ashley Cleek is a reporter-producer for Reveal. In an upcoming episode, Cleek and her team will see if they can use their honed investigative skills to get to the bottom of smaller, more personal mysteries.

She’s calling these stories Inconsequential Investigations. In one of them, Cleek grapples with a personal mystery that has stayed with her for nearly two decades, involving a strange, late-night phone call from someone claiming to be Jeff Mangum, lead singer of famed Athens indie rock band Neutral Milk Hotel. WUGA’s Lara Dua-Swartz sat down with Cleek to chat about her upcoming episode of Reveal, which will air on WUGA on Friday.

Inconsequential Investigations, an episode of Reveal, will air on WUGA on Friday at 1 pm.

A native New Yorker, Lara is new to Athens, having just moved to this delightfully quirky town in 2021. She’s been working in broadcasting for the last 25 years in markets such as New York City, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, and Atlanta. When she’s not at WUGA, you can find Lara covered in cats, playing D&D, or skating (as a rookie) with Classic City Roller Derby.
Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
