Athens holiday budget

University of Georgia

The holiday shopping season kicks into high gear with Black Friday and Cyber Monday coming up. A recent study determined the maximum budgets for cities around the nation.

Holiday sales are projected to reach more than $1 trillion this year. With the average household carrying more than $10,000 in credit card debt, analysts at the personal finance website WalletHub suggested spending limits for more than 550 U.S. cities. Analyst Chip Lupo.

“Athens-Clarke County averages a holiday budget of a little over $1,000,” according to Lupo. “Around Athens it makes sense because it’s primarily a college town…majority of the students leave the area during the holidays. It’s fairly moderate to low-income because it is a college town.”

Income, age, and savings-to-expenses were considered in compiling the list.

Roswell had the highest holiday budget in the state, at $3,000.Palo Alto, CA, has the highest average holiday budget, both among small cities and overall, at $4,485.
