Athens-Clarke County (ACC) now has the ability to warn the community of verified threats.

Athens-Clarke County’s 911 Center can now use the Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS) messages. IPAWS is a part of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and is used to provide alerts of authenticated emergencies and life-saving information to the public through mobile phones, radio and television.

Through ACC’s 911 Center, alerts can be sent to all mobile devices in a specific location. This includes non-residents as well.

Students, faculty, and staff of the University of Georgia may receive IPAWS messages in the case of an emergency. However, it should be noted that UGA alerts will remain the university’s primary emergency notification system.

Alexzundra Tillman is a part-time reporter and producer. She is currently pursuing her masters degree in Film and Television studies at UGA and hopes to work at the cross section of these two fields in the future.
