Controversial Arena, Police SUVs on Commision's Agenda

The Classic Center

The Athens-Clarke County mayor and commission meets at 6 pm today for a regular session, where commissioners are scheduled to vote on a variety of items, including the implementation of eco-stations for trash collection on Clayton Street and the potential purchase of nine hybrid SUVs for the ACCPD.

Commissioners will also discuss pre-construction plans for the controversial Classic Center Arena. Critics of the plan to build a new, 5,000-seat arena cite fears that the complex will change the face of eastern downtown Athens, and will create few well-paying jobs. Tax Allocation District Advisory Committees, and the adoption of the Law Enforcement Training Program Competitive Grant, which will provide funds for training supplies and equipment for ACC police officers, are also on the agenda.

The regular session can be streamed live on the Athens Clarke County Government's YouTube channel or Facebook Page at 6 PM today.
