Discrimination Ordinance Proposed by Athens-Clarke County

Mayor Kelly Girtz assigned the task of drafting an anti-discrimination ordinance to the Legislative Review Committee in March 2020, and since then, the five members of the committee have been working with county attorneys to draft a proposed ordinance. Now, after a meeting yesterday where committee members continued to refine language addressing marital status, hairism, and other issues, the committee voted unanimously to send the draft ordinance to the full Commission for further action.

Here's District 2 Commissioner Mariah Parker discussing the final draft and the importance of making it accessible.

"I think that the final draft we got is pretty comprehensive. And I feel really good about it. Still a lot of work to do in the Office of Diversity Inclusion, to make sure that process is accessible as well because it might-- it could be airtight, but if no one knows how to access it, then why have it at all?"

Commissioners will probably see the proposal on July 20 at their agenda-setting session, and are expected to vote on it in early August.
