Women’s Equality Day is Thursday, it commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote. Congress designated August 26th designation in 1971, but the gender gap remains.
The U. S. ranked 30th on the World Economic Forum’s ranking of 156 countries based on gender equality, though that is up significantly from last year’s 53rd place.
A recent report by the personal finance website WalletHub shows Georgia is near the bottom on its list of 2021’s Best and Worst States for Women’s Equality. Analyst Jill Gonzalez.
“Unfortunately Georgia could be doing a lot better when it comes to women’s equality, it ranked in the bottom six, sixth worst for women’s equality, specifically when it comes to the workplace,” Gonzalez said.
“We tried to be pretty comprehensive here, so apart from the workplace, in all we looked at 17 different indicators of gender equality. So not only things like the gap between female and male executives, to the disparity in unemployment rates, but also education and health statistics and political empowerment. How many women are represented in Congress, at the state and local levels as well.”
Nevada topped the list for women’s equality while Utah was last at number 50.
