Oconee County Parents Speak Out Regarding School District's COVID-19 Response

Some parents in Oconee County are becoming frustrated with how the district has responded to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
On Friday the Oconee County School District reported 28 active COVID-19 cases, and 167 students and staff members quarantined as a result. This amounts to just under 2% of in person students and staff members being placed in quarantine.

“We need a mask mandate, that’s the number one thing that we need.”

That’s Andrea Wellnitz. She’s a parent in Oconee County who, along with several others have been pushing for stricter COVID precautions, and more transparency from the district.

“Dr. Branch needs to tell us what the threshold is to move to pivot into a hybrid model or a remote learning model for the district.”

While the Oconee County School District specifies they will be following statewide and national guidelines for handling the pandemic, they have not yet specified at what level of cases they would move away from in person learning.

Oconee County Schools are set to return to in person learning on January 5th.
