Athens News Matters for June 22, 2024

About 45,000 Georgians are incarcerated in county jails around the state. In Athens, Georgia, some incarcerated women at the Clarke County Jail are spending their time behind bars in a surprising way—learning how to build homes.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, has predicted that at least 25 major storms will occur this year. Dr. Marshall Shepherd is the Associate Dean of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia. He is also the Georgia Athletic Association Distinguished Professor of Geography and Atmospheric Sciences at UGA. He sat down with me to discuss weather predictions for this year—and how Athens, Georgia may be affected. Here’s that conversation.

17 young Black women were celebrated during Athens’ first annual Miss Juneteenth Pageant held last Saturday night at the Morton Theatre. While trophies abounded, only one young woman went home with the crown and sash.
