International Museum Day

Each year since 1977, May 18 has been designated International Museum Day by the International Council of Museums (ICOM for short). Last year, more than 37,000 museums participated in the event in about 158 countries and territories, organizing events and activities to raise awareness about the fact that, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.” The theme for the 2022 version of International Museum Day is “The Power of Museums.” Museums of all kinds have the power to teach us about the past and open our minds to new ideas. They have the power to move us toward sustainable development goals, the power to play with new technology to increase accessibility, and the power to build community through education. Museums in China, Dubai, Argentina, Burkina Faso, Luxembourg and many other countries are adding their events and programming for International Museum Day to an interactive map that you can find at icom.museum.
