The museum and other Athens attractions are now part of Georgia’s Trail of Legacy and Lore, a new self-guided tourism trail that spans more than 90 miles, with immersive attractions that reflect the best of the cultural arts, architecture and heritage in Athens, Oconee County, Madison, Eatonton, Milledgeville, Gray-Old Clinton and Macon.
The trail tells the stories of history, events and unique architectural, literary, musical, design, and artistic endeavors from the earliest indigenous communities to Georgia’s iconic music scenes of the nineteen seventies and eighties. From the early frontier days and the Civil War to the Civil Rights era, the unforgettable stories and traditions of this region of Georgia connect visitors to the past.
Athens-area attractions include the Morton Theatre, one of the first and oldest surviving African American vaudeville theaters in the United States; the Athens Music Walk of Fame; the Church-Waddel-Brumby House, a house museum that also serves as the city’s welcome center; the State Botanical Garden of Georgia; the Lyndon House Arts Center and Ware-Lyndon House; the T.R.R. Cobb House; the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries and UGA’s historic North Campus.
Visitors can visit legacyloreGA.org to find an interactive map that includes themed itinerary ideas to suit a wide range of interests.
Hannah Smith, director of marketing and communications for Visit Athens, called the trail “an amazing opportunity to showcase beloved local sites while collaborating with neighboring communities to raise awareness about Georgia’s rich history and expand perceptions of its evolving destinations.”
