Bulldog Olympians

Do you miss the Olympics already? Now you can recapture some of the magic by visiting a new exhibit on display at the UGA Special Collections Libraries that celebrates the Olympic glory of University of Georgia Athletics.

The exhibit “Bulldog Olympians” takes viewers through decades of the international competition, which has hosted more than two hundred U G A athletes competing for Team U S A or their home countries. The display includes original Olympic artifacts and rarely seen photographs of Georgia’s Olympians, including a look behind the scenes from retired swimming and diving coach Jack Bauerle, who served as head coach of the U S women’s swimming team for the two thousand eight Olympic Games, held in Beijing.

Among the forty-five individual medalists from UGA, the exhibit features triple jumper Keturah Orji, shotput medalist Reese Hoffa, basketball player and four-time Olympic gold medalist Teresa Edwards, and gold medal basketball player Vern Fleming. It spans Olympic Games from nineteen thirty six, when Spec Towns broke the world record in the hurdles, to this year, when thirty-three current and former Bulldogs participated and four won medals.

Archivist Jason Hasty will give free tours of the exhibit at 3 p.m. on Fridays before home football games.

The Special Collections Libraries Building is located on the University of Georgia campus in Athens and is open to visitors for free weekdays. For more information or to schedule a tour, visit LIBS.UGA.EDU/SCL.
