Sen. John Kennedy is leading a study committee on what’s being called a quiet crisis with one in five students deemed chronically absent last school year, which means missing 10% or more of the school year.

School absenteeism rates remain stubbornly high, while students are scoring worse in core subjects like math and reading.

More students have been skipping school since the COVID-19 pandemic, and Georgia lawmakers are looking into the problem.
