The demolition of Legion Pool got underway on Thursday. The University System of Georgia approved the plan in January.

UGA’s compromise to Legion Pool is fewer parking spots than previously proposed and an alternative summer sport facility.

According to UGA a total of 127 comments were received. 84 comments were opposed to the project and 34 were in favor, with 9 other comments.

On Monday night a public hearing was held to address the University of Georgia’s plans to redevelop Legion Pool and Legion Field.

Proposed changes include improving the sewer system, creating a public parking deck, and constructing a mixed-used private development in the Graduate Hotel site and adjacent areas.

At the Mayor and Commission agenda setting meeting Tuesday, elected officials reviewed a proposed redevelopment project for Homewood Village Shopping Center on Jefferson Road.

The Athens community will get another chance to discuss the controversial redevelopment of the University of Georgia President’s House on Prince Avenue.
