Mall redevelopment passes first round of votes

In a six-minute meeting, the Athens-Clarke County Mall Redevelopment Committee (MARC) passed the first of several key votes for a 78.4-acre live/work space.

After 22 iterations of a community benefits agreement (CBA), which lays out what stakeholders will bring to the project, ACC officials and developers reached a consensus on the rules of their partnership.

Caitlin Dye, Business Development and Incentives Coordinator for the ACC Economic Development Department, held the vote.

Tonight, the Clarke County Board of Education, a stakeholder in the mall development, plans to vote on an intergovernmental agreement between the school district and the county. The agreement dictates that the county will use parts of the mall project for CCSD and youth services.

At Friday’s wrap-up discussion for the mall development committee, CCSD member Mumbi Anderson, expressed her support for the development.

The ACC Mayor and Commission is scheduled to vote on development plans and the CBA on Tuesday.
