WUGA Radio is celebrating its 37th anniversary today. Athens’ NPR affiliate signed on for the first time just before 6 AM on the morning of August 28, 1987. Program Director Robb Holmes was the first voice on air. Here are those first comments:
“Good morning, this is WUGA Athens, now beginning regular broadcast operations. WUGA is licensed to the Georgia Public Telecommunications Commission and is a member of Peach State Public Radio. WUGA studios are located in, and operated by, the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. WUGA offers a variety of locally originated, cultural, and informational programing, as well as programs from state and national public radio networks. Thank you for joining us on this, our first day of broadcasting.”
The mission of WUGA is to make a difference in quality of life by delivering programs that inspire curiosity about and engagement in the world, the arts, and the human condition.
In addition to programming from NPR and Georgia Public Broadcasting, WUGA has also produced several local shows, including African Perspectives, Athens News Matters, Night Music and more.
After several temporary offices, WUGA Radio found its permanent location in the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education.
