The Athens Clarke County Mayor and Commission will have a work session on Tuesday August 12. On the agenda is a project to improve pedestrian safety in the W. Broad Area and Hancock neighborhoods. They will also discuss ordinance updates, and updates on the Affordable Housing Investment Strategy or AHIS.

The AHIS, which was initiated in 2023, seeks to create and maintain opportunities to support low income earners in need of housing. New affordable housing strategies will be presented Tuesday, and existing initiatives will also be reviewed.

According to Athens Housing and Community Development Director, Melinda Lord, the county is in need of 8,800 units to support renters who make less than $35,000 a year. This number does not include students.
