Georgia Ranks as the 9th Worst State for Working Dads

WalletHub

Georgia is among the worst states when it comes to working dads. That's according to the personal finance website WalletHub, which studied the 50 states plus Washington D.C. in 22 different categories. Analyst Jill Gonzalez says Georgia came in as the 9th worst state in the country in several key indicators of friendliness for working fathers.

"That data set ranges from average length of a workday for males, child care costs, to the share of men in good or better heath," Gonzalez said. "Unfortunately Georgia broke into the bottom ten for working dads, really across the board, specifically when it comes to things like economic and social wellbeing, the work-life balance, and health."

Georgia ranked particularly low some in a few areas.

"Looking at working dads specifically, we looked at the male uninsured rates, right now in Georgia about 20% of males are not insured, that ranked in the bottom five. We also looked at prostate and colon cancers, where males are males are at a little bit of a higher risk here in Georgia, as well as heart disease."

She says the news isn't all bad. The Peach state did have a few bright spots.

"It's certainly not all bad in Georgia, it did do better when it comes to childcare. It has some of the lowest childcare costs in the country, it's about eight percent of the median income for families with a father present. We also looked into daycare quality and Georgia was a little bit above average there, so even though you're not paying top dollar for daycare, you are getting pretty good quality here."

Analysts also said the state provided good access to medical care for children.

"There are lot of pediatricians per capita so there's a lot of access to pediatric services."

Connecticut was the best rated state for working dads, while Mississippi came in dead last.
