Athens Under Flash Flood Watch

National Weather Service

Athens is under a watch flood watch through Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued an alert for much of north and central Georgia. The area watch includes Clarke, Barrow, Jackson, Madison, Oconee, and Oglethorpe counties.

Forecasters say flooding in low lying and flood prone areas will be possible, especially in urban areas along the Interstate 20 corridor. In addition, creeks, streams, and rivers may overflow their banks. Showers and thunderstorms are likely until about 10 pm. There is a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday. Forecasters say isolated flash flooding could occur through Friday night. Rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches are possible in the area through Friday. The heaviest rain is expected today through tonight, and Thursday.
