The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is charging a suspect involved in a weekend shooting with murder. According to a department media release, 21-year old Jalen Brown was arrested after shooting Rayquann Jernigan Sunday morning.
Officers were called to the scene of Riverview Apartments on College Avenue in reference to a fight in progress call and shots fired. When they arrived, they found 17-year Jernigan with a single gunshot wound to the chest. He was not breathing and later succumbed to his injuries. The suspect, Brown, was still inside the apartment complex. Brown told officers he fired in self-defense. After interviewing Brown and other witnesses, he was charged with murder. The weapon used in the homicide was recovered on the scene.
