GBI Releases Assessment of Fentanyl Spill

Georgia Bureau of Investigation

The GBI has released an assessment after a fentanyl spill in Atlanta Wednesday. The agency says evidence containing a powder of fine furanyl fentanyl leaked through untaped corners and seams of a cardboard box. According to a media release, the Crime Lab has modified procedures related to repackaging and returning drug evidence to ensure the situation does not happen again. These procedures include enhanced sealing and new containment protocols. Return of drug evidence has resumed.

Duluth Police officers were exposed to the drug Wednesday when they were transporting it from the GBI Crime lab. The AJC reports Hazmat crews used water hoses to clean surfaces that may have been exposed to the drug.
