John Gentry, the director of Oconee County Parks and Recreation, recently resigned to take a job in Gwinnett County.
This week, Oconee County Commission Chairman John Daniell announced that Gentry is leaving to take a position as the head of Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation Department. Gentry has been the Oconee director of the department since 2004.
Gentry is moving to a much larger department as he becomes the director of the Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation Department. According to U.S. Census Bureau data, Oconee’s population is nearly 37,000, while Gwinnett’s population is more than 900,000. Oconee’s Parks and Recreation Department administers four parks; Gwinnett’s Park and Recreation Department has 49 parks.
Gwinnett County’s 2015 parks and recreation annual report lists more than 721,000 participants in programs conducted by organizations that rent Gwinnett facilities, such as youth sport leagues.
