The American Red Cross is asking eligible donors to help save lives this summer. The organization has issued an emergency call for donations due to what it calls a critical shortage of blood. Communications Manager Kristen Stancil says donations have fallen short of expectations for the past two months.
“We have issued an emergency call for all eligible blood and platelet donors of all blood types to give now to help save lives,” Stancil said. “Our donations generally decline during the summer months because people are busy with seasonal activities as well as travel and we don’t see as many as our regular donors as well as new donors during the summer months. So we are encouraging anyone who is eligible to come out and roll up a sleeve.
Nearly 700 fewer blood drives are scheduled during the weeks before and after Independence Day. Several blood drives are scheduled in an around the Athens area.
