Driver Killed in Dump Truck Wreck in Oconee County

A dump truck driver was killed in a one-vehicle wreck on Georgia Highway 53 Monday morning.

The truck caught fire after the wreck and workers had to cut down trees in order to extricate the truck from the forest. According to authorities, the wreck closed traffic to one lane in an area between Highway 78 and Lane Creek Road.

A representative for the Georgia State Patrol noted the preliminary findings of the dump truck accident.

“Preliminary findings indicate that a 2006 Mack CV700 dump truck was northbound when it experienced tire failure,” said the State Patrol representative. “The truck went off the road on the right shoulder and went into the woods, where it’s front end struck several trees, overturned and caught fire.”

The driver, whose name has not been released yet, died at the scene of the crash.

The GSP and an officer from the Department of Public Safety’s Motor Carrier Compliance Division are investigating the wreck.
