Athens Police Arrest Suspect in 40 Watt Burglary

Clarke County Sheriff's Office

Athens-Clarke County police arrest a suspect in the 40 Watt burglary that occurred last Friday, July 28.

Michael Simpson Wilson, 36, was arrested and charged with two counts of felony burglary following a search of his home, which turned up items stolen from the downtown Athens nightclub.

Wilson became a suspect after allegedly selling some of the stolen equipment at a Guitar Center in Greenville, South Carolina. Employees of the store later saw the social media posts about the burglary and alerted the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. Epifanio Rodriguez, Public Information Officer of the ACC Police Department, explained how detectives were able to close in on Wilson’s arrest.

“We were contacted and our detectives drove up to Greenville and were able to retrieve surveillance footage of the suspect,” Rodriguez said. “The owner of the club identified him as a former sub-contractor. A search warrant at his residence in Oglethorpe County subsequently lead to additional items from the burglary being recovered.”

Wilson was incarcerated Wednesday at the Athens-Clarke County Jail, where the bond for one of his burglary charges is set at $4,000.
