Hartwell Woman Arrest in Pitbull Attack and Death of Grandson

The GBI is investigating the death of a toddler after an apparent dog attack in Hart County. According to a media release, the child was being cared for by his grandmother Sandra Adams at her Hartwell home. Adams and the boy were outside and when they attempted to go back inside the home, Adams’ two pit bulls ran out the back door, knocked her to the ground and attacked the child, who suffered extensive injuries.  Adams tried to shield the child from further attack and pull the dogs away.

She was eventually able to get the dogs back inside the residence and pick up the child. She then picked up the child’s mother Amy Adams at a nearby location, and they both carried the child to Reddy Urgent Care in Hartwell. Sandra Adams had been cited on multiple occasions by the Hartwell Police Department regarding disorderly animals.

She was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder, Cruelty to Children Second Degree and Involuntary Manslaughter. The body was taken to the GBI crime lab for autopsy.
