Athens Rally and Vigil in Support of Undocumented Immigrants/Charlottesville, Virginia

Athens for Everyone and the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition are holding a rally in support of undocumented immigrants in the US and a solidarity vigil for Charlottesville, Virginia. Organizers want the federal government to support the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or DACA, implemented by the Obama administration. The head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, has said the act is not a guaranteed protection against deportation.

Beto Mendoza is one of the organizers.

“We know that DACA can be ended at any time by this administration, so we are supporting a national call to support DACA,” according to Mendoza.

He says the rally and vigil shows unity among those attending.

“The way immigrants have been treated in this nation is a result of rhetoric of white nationalists and they’re putting together a big campaign to dehumanize people in the first place.”  “I think immigration issues tie with attacks on brown bodies

The rally and vigil take place at the Arch this evening from 5:30 to 7 pm. Those attending are asked to bring a candle. The groups say there are 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the US.
