Athens Unemployment Rate Down in July

Georgia Department of Labor

The unemployment rate in Athens dropped in July. The 5.1 percent figure was one-tenth a percentage point lower than in June. The Georgia Department of Labor released the results today. Commissioner Mark Butler says the over-the-year numbers were up for Athens.

"When we take a look at the over-the-year job growth in Athens, the area is showing very strong job growth with almost a three percent increase over the last 12 months,” according to Butler. “Which means, in raw numbers, about 2600 more jobs today than we had this same time last year.”

Butler says most of that job growth came in leisure and hospitality and government. He urges employers and those seeking jobs to use the department’s online job listing service employgeorgia.com to post or look for jobs.
