Gov. Deal Selects Michael Thurmond to Serve on Stone Mountain Memorial Association

Governor Nathan Deal has announced the appointment of Athens-native Michael Thurmond to the Stone Mountain Memorial Association. Thurmond is the CEO of DeKalb County, and the former head of the Georgia Department of Labor and superintendent of the DeKalb County School District.  He is also the author of “Freedom: Georgia’s Antislavery heritage, 1733-1865.” According to its webpage, the association exists "to sustain, enhance, and protect Stone Mountain park and to provide historical, natural, cultural, and recreational resources for all who visit."

Deal will be joined by members of the King family, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Rep. Calvin Smyre, Capitol Arts Standards Commission members and others to unveil the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. statue at the Georgia State Capitol on Monday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. The event is open to the public and seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
