Home in 5 Meeting to Increase Foster Care Awareness

Home in 5 is holding a meeting is being held this week for organizations and individuals interested in increasing the number of foster homes. Home in 5 is a public-private partnership to increase foster care awareness, foster homes, and support in Region 5, which covers north Georgia. The coalition is working to keep foster children from Clarke and Oconee counties closer to home.  Susie Weller is the Executive Director of Children First; she says the need far outweighs local resources.

“So if people are interested, and participate in this large need that we have,” Weller said.  “We have about 40 foster homes in Clarke and Oconee today and we have almost 300 kids in foster care.  That means that the rest of the kids are not in these two counties, they are likely in our region, or they may be spread throughout the state.”

That meeting is Thursday at the Fanning Institute from 12 until 2:30. People who are not considering foster children, but like to help in other ways are also invited to attend.
